Working with multiple tracks provides a lot more flexibility than trying to work on just one track. This is set in "Edit menu > Preferences > Quality".Ĥ) There's not usually any need to reduce a project to 1 track while you are working on it - Audacity is designed to handle multiple tracks efficiently. Converting audio to a sample rate lower than 44100 will often reduce the sound quality.ģ) For highest sound quality while you are mixing and processing sounds, use a "bit depth" of 32 bit. "Export" and "Export Selection" are also useful for making backups of tracks - if you record your own material it is highly recommended that you Export a backup of the recording straight away.ġ) Use Audacity 1.3 (current version 1.3.12)Ģ) If you have audio clips that have different sample rates, convert them all to the same sample rate - recommended rates are 44100Hz or 48000Hz. "Export" is the final step in your production when you convert an Audacity Project into a normal audio file that can be played elsewhere. This step of "Mix and Render" is optional as the tracks will be automatically mixed down when you "Export". To "Mix" all of the tracks/clips into a single track, press Ctrl+A (select All), then from the "Tracks" menu select "Mix and Render. In Audacity 1.3 you can even drag them to different tracks, though there are still a couple of constraints on this (if you have trouble dragging clips to other tracks, just cut and paste them instead). Use the "Time Shift" tool (double headed arrow) to drag the audio clips to where you want them. Milliseconds wouldn't make sense, but they might mean something else in computer-speak.Handling multiple audio clips is very much easier in Audacity 1.3 than 1.2, so if you do not already have Audacity 1.3 you should upgrade. I'm guessing, but I assume the first number is padding at the beginning, the second is the end padding, and guessing once again, the numbers probably refer to the number of samples.
Hopefully they'll agree, which would mean for some reason Audacity doesn't ignore the MP3 padding, and/or there's no gapless information saved to the output file.Įdit: I just remembered fb2k also displays the encoder padding, although it seems only for MP3, and it may depend on the encoder used. Check their individual durations and merge them while outputting a wave file. I also merged them as a wave file because there's no padding for wave files, and as you can see by the screenshots. I merged three tracks after first checking their total durations, and then compared that to the duration of the output MP3.
If you select multiple files, the total duration is shown. under "General" it displays the duration. If you add it to the GUI somewhere (assuming it's not already) it displays various information about audio files. Any duration displayed by fb2k excludes the extra silence.įb2k has a UI element called "Selection Properties". Gapless playback means the silence is skipped (the gapless information is stored in the file). I think El Heggunte is correct, and the individual durations didn't come from fb2k.Īll lossy codecs add silence to the beginning and end of the audio.
